It was a cold and windy mid December morning that I happened upon the buoys. I left the house to walk the beach and had forgotten the camera. There was a bright red glow above the Nubble peninsula and I thought to myself that I should have brought the camera. I walked along collecting treasures and saw a huge mass in the distance on the beach. As I got closer, I realized that it was a big tangled mass of buoys and lobster traps. I ran back to the house, got the camera and shot what I could until my hands just about froze.
I later learned that this is referred to as a flower pot. The traps get tangled up usually after a pounding storm. When boats pass over them, they see all of the colorful buoys floating together almost like a bouquet of flowers. And of course, the mass of weighted traps is known as the pot.
